OSIMO: city of “headless” people. The reason of this particular name finds its explanation in the Town Hall, wher headless stautes are exhibited. Osimo, dating back to the period between VII and VI century before Christ, is situated on a hill, with an altitude of 265 meters above the sea level, and overlooks the Musone valley. Osimo is the old Roman Auximum, disputed by Pompeo and Caesar in the civil war. You don’t have to miss: the church of St. Joseph from Copertino, protecting the students, the ruins of Fonte Magna (Magna Source), where the tradition says Pompeo stayed to let his horses water during the civil war; the Campana Palace, “La Nuova Fenice” theatre, San Leopard Cathedral, a real Romanesque-gothic jewel beautified by its adjacent baptistery, the Piazza Nuova Gardens, where you can admire a beautiful panorama. Moreover, you must visit the Caves, dug into the sandstone under the historic town center: due to the vastness and treasure of their architectural and enigmatic details, they are considered one of the most mysterious places in Italy.
